The UMBC Upward Bound Program includes elements designed to improve the skills and motivation of participants. During the academic year component and the summer component, the following services are offered:
• The Upward Bound Core Curriculum of Mathematics thru calculus, Foreign Language, Laboratory Science, and English Composition and Literature.
• These courses are supplemented by PSAT/SAT Prep, Study Skills and Computer Technology.
• Tutorial services to assist students with course work and earn grades (A’s and B’s) that will gain admission to the post-secondary institution of their choice with free money (Grants and Scholarships).
• Academic, career, personal and social advisement and guidance to help students stay focused.
• Exposure to cultural events, recreational activities and academic programs, and other activities of cultural and academic enrichment not generally available to low income students but necessary to enhance students’ motivation to aspire to complete postsecondary education.
• Activities that acquaint participants with the range of career options available to them to broaden their perspective on career option, particularly in area where minorities are traditionally underrepresented.
• Participants’ exposure to role models and mentors, most of whom are from backgrounds similar to their own, who have succeeded in completing post secondary education or beyond.
• Activities that involve parents in students’ academic endeavors to enhance students’ supports for their educational endeavors.
• A residential program that simulates the college-going experience and a Bridge Program for seniors that facilitates the transition from high school to college and increases participants’ success in postsecondary education.
